Which Roof Window is Right for Me?

Every home is configured differently, and every person will have preferences over which roof window best suits their lifestyle. There are, however, certain factors that can narrow down your options or make certain design styles more appropriate for your property. Take a look at our guide and get to know which Fakro roof window is right for you!

Glazing

The placement of your roof window is crucially important in deciding which is best for you, as the placement will affect which type of glazing is most suitable for the project. If the window is going to be installed above head height, the glass used should be laminated – this ensures that if the glass is shattered, the plastic membranes between the two sheets will catch and retain the shards.

If you’re looking more for thermal efficiency, triple glazing practically eliminates heat loss. Other choices include tinted, obscure, reflective and self-cleaning glass.

Roof Pitch

The pitch of your roof will also assist in determining which type of rooflight is right for you. The vast majority of roof windows are suitable for pitches between 15 and 90 degrees; however, the installation pitch range can differ for specific windows.

Flat roofs best suit standard domed or non-domed designs, for example, and to ensure the flow of water from the glass surface of non-domed windows, the window should be installed with a pitch of at least 2 degrees. These specifications can narrow down your options, so it’s important to consider this before you have your heart set on one style.

Roof WindowsEnergy Efficiency

A well-insulated roof can be let down by a badly insulated window – this can cause heat loss, which is not ideal if you’re looking for more energy efficient flat roof window options.

At a minimum, you should opt for standard double glazing with a thermally insulated glazing unit and flashing for your Fakro roof window, but for better performance you should consider triple glazing and high-quality flashing, especially if eco-consciousness is important to you.

Room Lighting

When your rooflights are fitted higher along your roof, the more natural light can flood the room. If incorporating natural light into your space is high on your list of priorities, we would recommend that the glass area should be approximately 15%-20% of the total floor area for maximum aesthetic results.

Lifestyle

If you’re someone who is constantly cleaning, it’s important to choose the roof windows that best suit your lifestyle!

Classic centre pivot skylight windows are one of the easiest to clean as the swivel ability of the sash allows access to both the interior and exterior glass panels.

However, if unrestricted picturesque scenes are your priority, and you enjoy being able to see nature or cityscapes around you, you would want to choose a top hung and pivot window for unobstructed views!

Manual or Electric?

If you want the comfort of being able to open your window from anywhere in the room, an electric roof window with motor and remote control would be a great choice. This would also allow multiple roof windows and accessories to be controlled from one controller, great for those who prioritise convenience. The use of the Z-Wave protocol permits communication with other smart home devices.

However, if you’re the type of person who likes pushing a window open and feeling the breeze on your face, then a manual pick is right for you!
